Chevy Cruze Sales Post Solid Gains in May
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze enjoyed a strong sales month in May, as General Motors Co. today reported total sales of 252,894 new cars and trucks, a 3.1% improvement over last year.
GM said it sold 23,055 Cruzes during the month, making it the second best-selling vehicle in the company's lineup. Cruze sales were up 17.5% compared to the same period last year, GM said.
The Chevrolet Silverado-C/K pickup, usually the strongest seller in GM's portfolio, sold 43,283 units in May.
May sales were the highest monthly sales for the Detroit automaker since September, the company said. Retail sales increased 9%, while fleet sales were down 10%, GM said.
GM also reported that its Cadillac brand witnessed a 40% increase versus the same period in 2012.
"Cadillac is growing faster than it has in almost 40 years, the pickup rebound is in full swing and we're seeing strong retail demand for our crossovers," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations. "These are powerful signs that the gradual recovery in the economy is becoming more broad-based."
