Chamber Seeking Applicants for Leadership Academy
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Applications are being accepted for the eighth year of the Mahoning Valley Local Government Leadership Academy. The 2015 edition of the event will run Tuesdays Jan. 27 through March 24.
More than 160 Mahoning Valley residents have graduated from the academy since its founding. The nine-week series is offered to help people become effective government leaders. It also provides class members a broad perspective on how local government operations should be conducted.
“The academy is geared especially for elected officials, those considering running for office, government and school employees, local business professionals and non-profit officials. It’s a great program for those interested in how government works,” said Guy Coviello, vice president for government affairs and media at the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber, which operates the program.
Classes include how to run for office, the duties of elected officials, local government collaboration, leadership skills, ethics, building sustainable communities, dealing with the media and citizens and promoting economic development.
Local presenters will include Ken Carano, former state representative and current Austintown trustee; Jason Loree, Boardman Township administrator; attorney Matt Blair of the Blair & Latell law firm; Dan Pecchia, owner of Pecchia Communications; Marla Carano of Youngstown State University; and the Regional Chamber’s economic development team.
Class members must attend at least seven of the nine classes to graduate from the academy. Classes will take place Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. with a light dinner at 5:30 p.m. Cost for the academy is $265. A graduation dinner will take place on April 7.
