Catacel Corp. Is Acquired by British Company
RAVENNA, Ohio -- London-based Johnson Matthey has purchased Catacel Corp., a high-tech company established here in 2001. Terms were not disclosed.
Catacel supplies a wide range of industries technology centered on the use of metal foil-coated catalysts and sorbents. Its products include high-heat-transfer catalyst technology for hydrogen and syngas production and fuel processing systems for stationary fuel cells. The company was profiled this March as part of The Business Journal’s Trending: TechBelt series (READ STORY).
Johnson Matthey, a specialty chemicals company, also describes itself as a “leader in sustainable technologies.” It products range from fuel cells and environmental catalysts to petrochemicals, edible oils and specialist oil and gas purification.
Catacel's business will be integrated into Johnson Matthey's Process Technologies Division and will have access to the British company’s global network of research and technology centers, according to the acquisition announcement. This will provide Catacel with the financial stability and scale of operations required to achieve its potential within its target markets, Johnson Matthey said.
Commenting on the transaction, William Whittenberger, Catacel president and chief technology officer, said: " We are delighted to become a part of the world-renowned Johnson Matthey organization. This is an outcome that we have long contemplated, owing to the fit between these companies and the mutual benefits we bring to one another."
Catacel's Stackable Structural Reactor (SSR) technology is a patented system for steam methane reforming that can deliver fuel savings or throughput increases in tubular reformers. Catacel also has a strong position in coated catalysts and reactor systems for fuel processing for stationary fuel cells.
Johnson Matthey has operations in more than 30 countries and employs approximately 12,000 people.
Catacel employs 30 people here in a variety of technical, commercial and manufacturing roles.
