Business Mixer Draws 300 to Tippecanoe Country Club
CANFIELD, Ohio -- The business mixer Thursday night at the Tippecanoe Country Club, co-sponsored by The Business Journal and the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals, drew 300 guests and nearly 20 vendors, enabling the private club to showcase the quality of its food and facilities.
Vic Rubenstein, vice president of Rubenstein Associates, Liberty Township, the marketing agency that did the work to get word out of the social-business event, and Gerry Heller, manager of the country club, were delighted at the turnout and expressed surprise at the number who came.
“I’m very surprised at the turnout,” a jubilant Rubenstein said.
“I’m very surprised and pleased by the turnout,” Heller said. “You can see everyone’s having a good time.”
The president of the country club board of directors, Bob Ferraro, described himself as “very surprised and tickled to death” at the attendance. “We had 250 reservations,” he related, “and even more have showed up.”
Observed Carol Potter, executive director of the Youngstown office of the Better Business Bureau, “You can feel the liveliness in this room.”
The attendance, Potter offered, reflects a new vitality among the younger members of the business community. ”It’s an opportunity for the younger generation to network and for us to network with the younger generation,” she said. ”You can see some of the individuals who have started new businesses in the area.”
Among those displaying their products and services at the event were Angels for Animals, L. Calvin Jones & Co., Hill, Barth & King LLC, Adamas Jewelry & Gifts, Marlowe’s Premium Coffee, Park Vista of Youngstown, two fitness centers, Residence Inn by Marriott in Niles, health insurance providers and real estate agencies.
Professionals and business owners of all ages and fields -- including bankers, lawyers, accountants, architects, people in video production -- filled the aisles and made it a slow walk to get from table to table.
Events such as last night’s, Rubenstein noted, are needed “to bring folks from the business community together, folks who otherwise probably wouldn’t meet.”
Said Patty Kimerer, who conducts media relations in HBK’s marketing department, “We wanted to build more relationships. It’s important that we get to know people on a personal level. This [mixer] makes perfect sense because it allows more people to get to know us.”
Two who attended, Maz Mawmawi, chief of the Howland office of Cinemanix Co., and Lindsey Goodrich, a graphic artist there, attended “to make new contacts,” Mawmawi said. “We want to see how we can contribute to the area.” Just as important, he wants to tell the business community of the “high production values” Cinemanix offers if they choose his studio to produce their commercials.
The mixer was an opportunity for those who attended to learn more about all the Tippecanoe Country Club offers, especially as a venue for their business events.
The club, which describes itself as "the golfer's country club," has 350 members and is looking to add more, Ferraro said. He listed some of the amenities Tippecanoe offers, from the golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and locker rooms to its banquet and dining rooms. Two specialties of executive chef, Tony Scacchetti, are seafood and Italian cuisine, Ferraro says.
Hole No. 6 on the first nine, “a par 4 dogleg left,” could be the most challenging hole on the course, Ferraro said. The golf pro at Tippecanoe a dozen years, Michael Spiech, is a patient instructor, the club president said. In the lessons he’s taken, Ferraro has found Spiech “very attentive to detail, very observant. He’ll have you work on one [weakness] at a time.”
Working with Spiech is assistant golf pro John Metzinger. Together they work with youths when school lets out and advise the golf teams.
The four tennis courts promote play among youths who compete against the tennis teams of other country clubs in the area.
