Breaking News: Vallourec Workers Vote Against Union
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- By greater than a two-to-one margin, workers at Vallourec Star's pipe mills here have voted against being represented by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America.
The vote was 367 workers against joining the union, or 71%, 148, or 29%, in favor. The results were announced at 9:30 this morning.
The collective bargaining election was supervised by the National Labor Relations Board. It's the fourth time in the last 18 years that workers at what today is Vallourec Star in Youngstown have attempted -- and failed -- to reorganize the pipe mill as a union shop.
The company released a brief statement acknowledging the defeat of the union vote.
"We at Vallourec Star are proud of our ongoing investments in our employees and the local community and will continue to provide a safe and respectful workplace where pay and benefits programs remain some of the best in the Valley and surrounding areas," the company said. "Our commitment to our employees and to the local community has been, is and will continue to be our culture."
