BP Supports 6,100 Jobs, Spends $435 Million in Ohio
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- BP’s business activities in Ohio accounted for more than $400 million in economic impact and helped employ more than 6,100 people in the state last year, according to a report the company released Friday.
In its U.S. Economic Impact Report 2013, BP detailed the effects of the $435 million it spent with more than 3,000 vendors across Ohio in 2012. This activity underpins the jobs of more than 760 BP employees, BP said, and supports an additional 5,400 jobs in the state.
Ohio is one of the few states in BP’s U.S. footprint that includes both downstream refining and marketing businesses and upstream exploration and production activities.
At its BP-Husky refinery, the company can process 160,000 barrels of crude oil per day and it supplies roughly one-quarter of all of Ohio’s daily transportation energy needs, the company said.
With more than 550 service stations that carry the BP logo, the company has “a major retail presence in Ohio,” it noted.
In early 2012, BP announced it intent to explore for oil and natural gas in the Utica basin in northeastern Ohio and secured leases on some 100,000 acres in Trumbull and adjoining counties. A drilling appraisal program is underway.
“In Ohio, BP operates a world-class refinery that provides millions of Americans the fuel they need and is also exploring for new energy resources,” said Mark Dangler, head of BP’s operations at its Toledo Refinery, in a prepared statement. “Partnering with Buckeyes across the state, we are creating opportunities that provide jobs while improving the communities in which we live and work.”
Across the United States, BP spent more than $25 billion with more than 15,000 vendors in 2012, the company’s report says When all the figures are added up, the company said, BP contributed $147 billion last year to the domestic economy.
