Talmer Bank Joins 'Teach Children to Save' Day
TROY, Mich. -- Talmer Bank and Trust is partnering with local schools in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin to celebrate "Teach Children To Save Day" with savings education this week. More than 2,000 youths will explore a lesson on saving and spending money and teaching children how to save towards a financial goal.
Banking Centers that will be visiting local elementary schools in Ohio include the local communities of Warren, Niles, Austintown, Boardman, Brookfield, Champion Township, Cornersburg, Cortland and Poland.
Teach Children to Save, established by the American Bankers Association in 1997, has reached more than six million young people through the commitment of 134,200 banker volunteers. “Being financially literate is one of the most important skills a young person can develop,” said Tom Nestor, Talmer executive managing director, retail sales and delivery.
The Talmer Kids Club Savings account helps learn the importance of money management. Participants receive a special certificate when they open their account and receive a treasure chest prize with each deposit of $10 or more. “Through our Kids Club Savings program we can motivate students and instill positive habits at a young age, creating a community of lifelong savers,” Nestor said.
Talmer Bank and Trust offers the following tips for money-savvy parents raising money-smart kids:
- Set the example of a responsible money manager by paying bills on time, being a conscientious spender and an active saver. Children tend to emulate their parents' personal finance habits.
- Explain the difference between needs and wants, the value of saving and budgeting and the consequences of not doing so.
- Open a savings account for your children and take them with you to make deposits, so they can learn how to be hands-on in their money management.
- Let friends and family know about your child’s savings goal. They’ll be more likely to give cash for special occasions, which means more trips to the bank.
The American Bankers Association provides financial education programs and resources that help bankers make their communities better. The association’s signature programs, Teach Children to Save and Get Smart About Credit, bring bankers and students together to increase financial literacy.
Talmer Bank and Trust is a subsidiary of Talmer Bancorp Inc. The bank offers a full suite of commercial and retail banking, mortgage banking, wealth management and trust services to small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.
