McNally Helps Home Savings Begin 125th Anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- John A. McNally IV walked from City Hall to 275 W. Federal St. Wednesday morning to join the Home Savings and Loan Co. in celebrating its 125th anniversary by issuing his “first official proclamation as mayor.”
The Home Savings clock tower has been, and remains, the most recognized aspect of the downtown skyline, “an icon,” the mayor noted, and the bank “has been a beacon” to those who travel to the downtown and work there.
In growing up on the North Side, McNally recalled, the Home Savings clock tower was the first thing he saw as he approached the downtown to shop.
He congratulated Home Savings President and CEO Patrick W. Bevack and the board of directors for their service to Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, noting how much the bank and its employees have given back. He dispensed with reading the proclamation he handed Bevack, instead saying, “It’s an honor to congratulate you for your many contributions to our community.”
Bevack, also the president and CEO of United Community Financial Corp., parent of Home Savings, responded, “Mr. Mayor, we’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished over 125 years” before announcing Home Savings is “kicking off 125 Days of Giving” at its 33 offices in Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
Each day for 125 business days, the bank (not the Home Savings Charitable Trust) will hand out a check for $125 to a nonprofit or charitable organization that serves a community Home Savings also serves, Bevack announced.
The first was New Lease on Life yesterday afternoon at the Struthers branch. New Lease is an animal shelter. The Struthers office was also the first branch Home Savings opened.
At the conclusion of 125 Days of Giving, July 11, Home Savings and its employees will participate in other celebrations the CEO did not specify. All he would say is, "There’ll be many surprises.”
As with any happy celebration, many pictures are taken -- by professionals as well as employees using their cell-phone cameras. Among the subjects were the employee with the longest service, Rose Fiorentine -- 49 years -- today quality control officer, and the newest, Dasche Dawkins, a teller in the downtown office who just completed his first month.
