Car Buyers Flock to Valley Showrooms in June
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Despite a month marked by massive recalls at General Motors Co. and Toyota, customers in the tri-county region flocked to dealers' showrooms during June.
Sales of new cars and trucks in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties increased 10.6% compared to sales a year earlier, reports the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio in its monthly report. Combined new- and used-vehicle sales were also up 10%, the reported noted.
Dealers said they sold 2,687 new models in June versus 2,428 during the same month in 2013. Total sales of new and used vehicles stood at 6,194 units compared to 5,628 a year earlier.
Leading the way in sales of new models is the Chevrolet Cruze, GM's small car manufactured at the automaker's Lordstown Complex. Last month, local dealers said they sold 240 Cruzes, a 46% increase over June 2013.
Other top new-model sales, based on volume, were the Chevrolet Equinox with 127 sold, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with 103 sold, the Chevrolet Malibu with 96 sales, and the GMC Terrain with 92 sales.
Among the top selling new vehicle dealers during the month were Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, with 182 sold; Taylor Kia of Boardman, 172; Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, 152; Stadium GM Superstore, Salem, 139 new cars and trucks; and Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, which reported 137 new cars and trucks sold.
