YSU Theater’s ‘Spitfire Grill’ Wins Kennedy Recognition
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- As Youngstown State University Theater prepares to open its second production of the season, its inaugural production is winning national praise, reports Scott Irelan, chairman of the theater and dance department. The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival awarded the production of “The Spitfire Grill” with certificates of merit for direction, overall ensemble work and overall production value, he says.
Two members of the cast -- senior musical theater majors Carly Magnuson of Canfield and Natalie Martzial of Youngstown -- were chosen to make presentations at the Kennedy Center’s Region II theater festival in January at Cleveland State University.
A representative of the Kennedy Center program attended a show, met with the director, music director and costume designer, before meeting wih the rest of the cast and crew. “He didn’t tell us to change it, He just shared what he experienced watching the musical,” Irelan said. “It was a dialogue really.”
“The Spitfire Grill,” a musical, was performed in October.
Another representative from the Kennedy Center has been invited to view the theater department’s next production, “A Steampunk Christmas Carol,” scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Ford Theater at Bliss Hall. In all, Irelan hopes to see eight to 10 YSU students chosen to represent the university at Cleveland States.
The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, founded in 1969, tries to improve college theater in the United States. More than 600 universities participate.
