Youngstown Streetscape Cleanup Set for May 31
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In this year’s Streetscape, "We Canna, Canna You?," volunteers will beautify the downtown landscape by removing debris, trimming trees, planting flowers and shrubs and mulching planted areas from 8 a.m. to noon May 31.
Focus areas are the West Federal Street median, John Young memorials, the southwestern corner of Front Street and South Avenue, City Hall and Wick Park. New projects are a joint effort with Treez Please on West Federal Street for a native habitat planting to include pollinators and a work project with Grow Youngstown to assemble an outbuilding.
Neighborhood groups will work throughout the city to beautify areas in all the wards. Green Youngstown will participate with R.U.B.Y. – the acronym for Revitalization and Urban Beautification of Youngstown -- the new trailer dedicated to improving the appearance of the community.
The executive director of Streetscape, Sharon Letson, anticpates 500 volunteers will participate in this 17th annual effort and would like to see more volunteers and contributions. The first 500 volunteers who register will be given free T-shirts and will treat to a light breakfast and a full lunch.
Should the weather not cooperate, the landscaping will be conducted the next day from from 8 a.m. to noon. Streetscape 2014 is a visual improvement project of Youngstown CityScape, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to revitalize downtown Youngstown and its gateways through beautification, education and preservation.
