YMCA Kicks Off Strong Kids Campaign Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown YMCA will launch its annual fundraising effort at 7 p.m. Saturday with the Strong Kids Campaign Party at The Georgetown in Boardman.
The public is invited to an evening that features a gourmet buffet, silent auction, iPad raffle, 50/50 raffle and dancing to the band Disco Inferno.
The Strong Kids Campaign, chaired this year by James E. Greene, was established to raise funds to provide financial help to underprivileged youth, families and individuals so they can become Y members or enroll in Y programs at no fee. In addition to money raised through major events such as the kickoff party and a Spin-A-Thon, member and public events and programs held at Y branches bring in significant donations.
Campaign volunteers also will be in the community soliciting donations from individuals and businesses.
“Every year, the Strong Kids Campaign helps thousands in our community,” Greene said, adding that 2012 campaign donations totaled more than $500,000 and presented more than $1 million in scholarships to nearly 3,000 children, families and individuals.
One of those families is the Chernes. “We had always wanted to become members of the Y,” explains Melissa Cherne, “but we were so appreciative to have the support come when we needed it the most.”
Tickets are $50 in advance and $75 at the door. They can be purchased at the Davis Y, Central Y or at the Georgetown Saturday. For more information, call Janice JanJanin at 330 503 9437 or visit the Youngstown YMCA website.
