YMCA Hosts Inaugural Day Camp at Austintown School
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The YMCA of Youngstown’s annual summer camp programs begin June 10 at the Davis Family YMCA in Boardman, and, for the first summer, at Austintown Middle School.
Children between the ages of 3 and 13 in the community are invited to take part in educational and recreational activities.
The inaugural summer program at the Austintown Middle School is a six-week day camp for children ages 6 to 13, which also begins June 10, said Aaron Shields, youth and teen director at the Davis Family YMCA. The six-week program offers breakfast and lunch, weekly field trips, a swim day each week, outdoors adventure and summer learning fun, Shields says.
Last year, more than 400 campers participated in the Davis Family YMCA’s 10- and 11-week day camps, Camp Curiosity and Camp Neehi.
“The Y’s summer camp programs are designed to help children extend the learning, fun, and character-building experience during the school year into the summer months,” Shields said in a prepared statement. “Camp activities are designed to keep children’s minds and bodies active while nurturing the Y's core values: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.”
Day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for campers between the ages of 6 and 13. The full-day program is designed to engage the children’s creative spirits through arts and crafts, swimming, outdoor adventure, summer learning-loss-prevention activities and weekly field trips.
Camp Curiosity runs from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for campers between the ages of 6 and 11. This arts and science enrichment program inhibits summer learning loss through fun skills geared toward math, reading, history, creative art activities, science experiments and outdoor activities and swim time, Shields said.
Camp Neehi runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for campers between the ages of 3 and 5. This enrichment program designed for preschoolers offers arts and crafts, science, games, story time, outdoor adventures and swimming.
The registration deadline for all camps is the Friday before the week children plan to attend. Camp brochures and registration information can be found at the website below, and registration can be completed online or in person at Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.
