Working Women Observe ‘Equal Pay Day’
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Business and Professional Women here will mobilize Friday to draw attention to the gap between men and women’s wages. On average, full-time working women earned 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, U.S. Census Bureau figures show.
The gap is even wider for women of color; over time this loss adds up to $9,575 per year and $434,000 in a lifetime.
Tuesday symbolized the day when women’s wages caught up to what men earned last year. Every year in April, Business and Professional Women along with hundreds of other female civil rights, labor, and community organizations come together for a national day of action known as Equal Pay Day.
The Youngstown Business & Professional Women are hosting an “Unhappy Hour” networking mixer Friday to promote Equal Pay Day here. “Women and their families can no longer afford to be shortchanged," said Lisa Dickson, club president, in a prepared statement. “We encourage businesses to pay women fairly, push for laws that will enforce current equal pay legislation and educate women on how to negotiate for higher salaries.”
Ohio Rep. Sean O’Brien has committed his support for the event, as have other elected officials, Dickson said.
The “Unhappy Hours” will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Magic Tree Pub & Eatery in Boardman.
Participants are asked to wear red to show their support for women whose wallets are always in the red, Dickson said. There is no fee to attend, but proceeds from a 50/50 and basket raffle and donations will go toward the Dr. Anne McMahon Scholarship Award.
This scholarship provides $1,000 each year to a female student who attends Youngstown State University. For more information, call Jayne Boucherle, membership chairwoman, at 330 519 5484.
The Youngstown Business & Professional Women’s Club was established in 1920 and works to achieve equity in the workplace through advocacy, education and information.
