White House Seeks Designs for 3-D Printed Ornaments
WASHINGTON – The White House, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution and Instructibles, is inviting makers and innovators around the country to participate in the first-ever 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge.
Up to eight winning designs will be 3-D printed and shipped to the White House, and some of the winners will be hung in the East Wing during the holiday season. Additionally, those selected to be displayed at the White House will be featured on the Smithsonian's 3-D data platform and will join a small collection of White House ornaments in the political history division of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Each model should be no larger than 3 inches by 3 inches and should reflect the holiday season. For an extra twinkle, pieces can be designed to fit or clip onto a string of lights. Suggested designs could incorporate winter sports, toys, activities and symbols.
The deadline for submissions is Nov. 10. Entrants must be U.S. residents.
Designs using any 3-D modeling software can be submitted, and having a 3-D printer is not required. Individuals new to 3D can visit Tinkercad and experiment with making 3-dimensional shapes.
