COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Mahoning County manufacturer of pavers and fire brick, Whitacre Greer Co., is one of nine companies in Ohio awarded safety intervention grants last month by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation.
The program suports employers reduce illnesses and injuries and helps them establish best practices to prevent accidenta and injuries in the workplace.
Whitacre, based in Alliance, was awarded $40,000 to buy seven air cannons and a compressor to reduce the risk of injury to arms and legs related to slips, trips and falls, awkward positions and manual material handling. Whitacre Greer is a century-old, family-owned manufacturing firm.
"We have more money available for safety-minded businesses this year, thanks to Gov. [John] Kasich's support of increased statewide efforts to promote workplace safety and encourage further investment in protecting Ohio's workers," said Steve Buehrer, BWC administrator/CEO, in a prepared statement. "With triple the dollars previously available, expanded eligibility, and a $3 BWC match for every $1 an employer contributes, the safety grant program is a common-sense solution for employers looking to keep their workers safe and reduce workers' comp costs."
Ohio private and public employers are eligible for safety intervention grants, which include a three-to-one matching amount up to $40,000.
