Webb Wines Wins Medals at Harrisburg Farm Show
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Two of the wines from Webb Winery won medals at the 2014 Pennsylvania Farm Show Wine Competition in Harrisburg. The winery's Vidal Blanc received a silver medal and the Fredonia received a bronze medal.
Wines were judged before the show by Rutgers University staff in New Jersey, an assurance that the judges and their evaluations were impartial; no judge has connections with the Pennsylvania wine industry. Wines are judged on clarity, color, aroma, taste, balance and overall quality -- all of which depend first on quality grapes. Each wine was evaluated by comparing it with wines of similar varietals, according to Joseph A. Fiola, extension enologist for the University of Maryland.
Webb Winery’s awards came just as the winery is gearing up for the annual “Wine & Chocolate” event Feb. 6, 7, 8 and 13, 14, and 15. At the event, Webb wines will be paired with chocolate samples from Philadelphia Candies, also in Hermitage, Pa.
Last year's event was sold out and sponsors say space is limited. Cost is $12 per person and reservations are required; call 724 856 2770.
Owners Kevin and Carlee Caiazza Webb opened their winery Dec. 20, 2012. All wines, which include reds, whites and blushes that range from dry and oaked to sweet and fruity are crafted from grapes, apples and other fruits grown in Mercer, New Wilmington and North East, Pa.
