Wean Foundation Awards $100K to 27 Organizations
WARREN, Ohio -- The Raymond John Wean Foundation has awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to 27 grassroots community organizations and student-led groups in Youngstown and Warren, Acting President Jennifer Roller announced Thursday.
The grants range from the maximum of $5,000, awarded to 11 recipients, to the $1,420 awarded to Cornerstone Youth Initiative, a community collaborative in Youngstown.
The funding was determined by the Wean Foundation’s Neighborhood Success and Leadership Program that has two components, “Engaging Residents” and “Cultivating Leaders,” said Corrie Adams, a program associate at the Wean Foundation. A council composed of residents of Warren and Youngstown guides the funding of the projects chosen.
Recipients and the grants awarded are:
- A Bridge from Coal to Diamond Girls, Youngstown, Girls Lead (Learn, Expect, Achieve, Dream), $1,719.
- Boulevard Park Block Watch, Youngstown, Beautiful Boulevards of Rush and Euclid, $5,000.
- Community Concerned Citizens II, Warren, Urban Community Victory Garden High Tunnel, $1,610.
- Cornerstone Youth Initiative, Youngstown, a community collaborative, $1,420.
- Garfield Community Gardens Group, Warren, a community composting collaborative, $2,255.
- Girlz Voices, Warren, a rock camp for girls, $5,000.
- HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, Boardman, $1,500.
- Historic Perkins Homestead Neighborhood Association, Warren, $5,000.
- Idora Wildcats 4-H Club, Youngstown, a woodshop program, $5,000.
- Just Because, Youngstown, for a children’s health fair and fun day, $5,000.
- Metro Assembly of God, Youngstown, an adopt-a-block operation restoration effort, $5,000.
- Quilts from the Heart, Warren, $5,000.
- Rocky Ridge Neighborhood Association, $4,385.
- South Side Community Garden, Youngstown, phase three of a community garden project, $2,710.
- Stop One Place Help Is Available Inc., Warren, direct assistance to residents, $5,000.
- T.N.R. of Warren, Inc., Warren, “A Snip in Time-West Warren project,” $5,000.
- Tabernacle Baptist Church, Youngstown, Children’s Defense Fund Summer Freedom School, $5,000.
- The Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, Youngstown, $5,000.
- The Upton Association, Warren, for a fourth-grade outreach program, $3,600.
- Upper North Heights Neighborhood Association, Youngstown, for a Crandall Park project, $4,859.
- Warren G. Harding High School, Warren, for an after-school program, “Commit to be Fit,” $2,550.
- We Are Warren Youth Squads, Warren, in support of the school’s volleyball team, $2,600.
- We Are Warren Youth Squads, Warren, in support of the school’s flag football league, $2,090.
- West Side Community Center, Youngstown, for a youth health and fitness program, $4,715.
- Youngstown East High School for its Panthers Garden Club, $2,100.
- Youngstown Inner City Garden, for community wheelchair access, $5,000.
- Youngstown Urban Minority Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Outreach Program Inc. for a college career readiness project, $1,200.
