Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership Gets Grant for Mural
WARREN, Ohio -- Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership was awarded a $2,735 grant by the Ohio Arts Council, which will help pay a $6,000 stipend for installation of a mural on a retainer wall at the former Morningside Power Plant.
“This grant allows us to commission a local artist to install a mural on this site, using a public selection process which will allow our community to help us choose the mural,” says Lisa Ramsey, development director at TNP.
The wall sits in the middle of the vacant lot at the former power plant and measures 11 feet tall by 100 feet wide. The selection process for choosing the mural will be similar to the one when TNP commissioned Warren artist Briar Rantilla to install a mural at 310 Elm Road N.E.
“Warren’s Resident Advisory Committee has identified the development of the former Mahoningside site as a part of its ’10-point plan’. While a mural alone certainly doesn’t achieve that, it certainly helps bring attention to the site, as well as providing some much needed aesthetic improvement,” added Matt Martin, TNP executive director.
Artists are invited to submit up to three scaled renderings of their proposal for the mural to TNP by July 31. Entries can be mailed or hand delivered by appointment to 170 N. Park Ave., or submitted electronically to Miller. The theme of the mural is open but artists are encouraged to explore notions of civic and community pride.
The public will have the opportunity to vote on submissions in a gallery opening format at the Trumbull Art Gallery in August, as well as the opportunity to cast votes online. The public selection will be jury protected by a panel made up of Warren Mayor Doug Franklin as well as representatives from TNP and the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County.
Since its inception in 2010, TNP has helped facilitate several other public art projects, including a bike rack in downtown Warren installed by Aaron Chine in partnership with the Trumbull County Health Department and a portion of the mural in Dave Grohl Alley in partnership with Main Street Warren.
More information about the mural project can be obtained by calling 330 599 9275.
