Streetscape Volunteers to 'Grow the YO' June 1
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- StreetScape 2013, the 16th annual fix-up, clean-up event in the downtown, will be held from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sharon Letson, executive director, announced May 24. Volunteers will beautify downtown Youngstown and entries to the city by removing debris, trimming, planting flowers and shrubs and mulching planted areas.
Among the sites of focus are the median in West Federal Street Median, the John Young memorials, and the corner of Front Street and South Avenue, City Hall and Wick Park.
Signed up as volunteers are student and faculty from Youngstown State University, staff from the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, Fifth Avenue Boulevard Neighbors, Mahoning Commons, Humility of Mary Health Partners, Northeast Homeowners Association, Buckeye Eyes and Ears Block Watch, 7th Ward Citizens Coalition, Rocky Ridge Neighborhood, Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp., Handel’s Neighborhood and Wick Park Neighborhood Association.
The number of volunteers has grown every year since the inaugural StreetScape and exceeded 400 last year. Letson projects 500 will participate this year.
Should the weather next Saturday not cooperate -- that is, rain heavily -- StreetScape will be delayed a day, until Sunday, same hours.
Besides the promise of feeling better about themselves and a more attractive city, workers
will be treated to a light breakfast and a full lunch. For more information, contact Youngstown CityScape at 330 742 4040.
StreetScape 2013 is a visual improvement project of Youngstown CityScape, a nonprofit organization with a mission of revitalizing gateways through beautification, education and preservation.
