Sports Pros Play April 27 for 'Comeback Project'
STRUTHERS, Ohio -- On April 27, a group of local sports greats will come together to help area teens improve their futures when the Riot Youth Center at Victory Christian Center presents “The Comeback Project. The basketball game will feature professional football players from around the Valley playing a team of youth and staff affiliated with the Riot.
The pro team will be coached by former Youngstown State and Ohio State University football head coach Jim Tressel, while the Riot will be led by WKBN 27 First News anchor Dave Sess.
The event is coming together through a partnership of Nate Ortiz, youth pastor at the Riot, and former Warren G. Harding and Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett. ESPN will film the game for an upcoming documentary that covers Clarett’s redemption of himself.
Professionals playing in the game include:
- Prescott Burgess (Warren G. Harding High School and a former Baltimore Raven).
- Maurice Clarett (Warren G. Harding, Ohio State University, and former Denver Bronco).
- Dan “Boom” Herron (Warren G. Harding, Ohio State University and the Cincinnati Bengals).
- Dave Herron (Warren G. Harding and former Minnesota Viking).
- Santonio Holmes (Ohio State University and Pittsburgh Steelers).
- Mario Manningham (Warren G. Harding and San Francisco 49ers).
- Mike McGlynn (Austintown Fitch, University of Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis Colts).
- Matt Overton (Indianapolis Colts).
- Anthony Smith (Hubbard and former Pittsburgh Steeler).
Halftime activities will include an autograph session with the players and Tressel along with a Chinese auction. The game begins at 1 p.m. in the Struthers Fieldhouse. Tickets are $9 (premium seating) and $7 (general admission).
