Shepherd of Valley Honors 3 with Stambaugh Awards
BOARDMAN, Ohio – Three people instrumental in the founding of Shepherd of the Valley in 1972 have been honored for their roles with Helen R. Stambaugh Awards.
At its annual dinner Monday, Shepherd of the Valley recognized Pat Niswonger, Ernie Sigle and the Rev. Gary Schreckengost.
The award recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations that have provided extraordinary contributions of time, talent or treasure that have had a profound and long-lasting effect upon the residents, staff, and Shepherd of the Valley communities, says Don Kacmar, executive director.
The first individual presented the award was Helen Stambaugh in 2008. The honor was named in her memory after her death.
Niswonger was the president of the Lutheran Women’s League 40 years ago. She was instrumental in securing the first major gift for the building campaign, presenting a check for $10,000 from the Lutheran Women’s League.
Schreckengost has supported Shepherd of the Valley from its inception. He served on the original steering committee and continued his service on the board of managers. Today he is senior pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Youngstown.
Sigle served on the original board of managers and was the second president of the board, 1974 and 1975. He has remained involved with Shepherd of the Valley, helping to ensure quality leadership as a member of the board nominating committee.
At the meeting, Patti Augustine and John Talstein were thanked for their service as they step down from the board.
Three members returned for a second term are Peter Haenftling, pastor of St. Marks Lutheran Church, Boardman, and Concordia Lutheran Church, Youngstown; Scot Phillips, president/owner/operator of Care Communities, NWCP Board of Directors; and Deborah Kaufmann, attorney with Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell Ltd.
Two new board members are Al Copp, past member and a financial planner, and Kurt Brugler, vice president at Farmers National Bank.
