Rotary, Grow Youngstown Get Saucy Oct. 26
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- "Not Your Nonna's Sauce Cook-Off" is set for Oct. 26 at Mt. Carmel Church here raise funds for Grow Youngstown and Rotary Club of Youngstown.
Ticket holders will receive three servings of pasta (wheat, gluten-free and spaghetti squash are available) and choose from more than 20 sauces. Tickets cover a salad, choice of nonalcoholic beverage and desert. Other tickets for beer and wine will be for sale.
The event is sponsored by Fox Youngstown, The Center for Lifestyle Change and WKBN. Proceeds will benefit Grow Youngstown’s service to neighborhoods deemed food deserts and the centennial projects of the Rotary Club of Youngstown.
Entrants can compete in these sauce categories:
- Red: A sauce based on any naturally red produce, such as tomatoes, beets, cherries and peppers.
- Green: Based any naturally green produce, such as basil, spinach, chard, escarole Brussels sprouts.
- White: Based on cheese, nuts, squash, turnips or potatoes. The judges welcome orange-fleshed squashes.
Judges are Mayor John McNally, Todd Franko, Rich Morgan, Denita Davis, Frank Occobocchi and Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Robert Rusu. And there will be winner for “Sauce Lover’s Choice” and “Best All-Local.”
Students Motivated by the Arts will provide hands-on activities for children of all ages. Brady’s Leap, a new-Celtic band that plays original and traditional songs, and pianist Betty Bannon, will provide the music.
Tickets are $15 for those 10 and older, and $5 for those younger. Additional servings of pasta are $5. The $30 Primavera “all you can eat” ticket includes a 10% off coupon from Grow Youngstown’s “A la carte” store.
