Regional Chamber Wins Award for YOUNG 2011
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Mid-America Economic Development Council yesterday announced the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber a first-place winner for its Youngstown Ohio Utica & Natural Gas (YOUNG) Conference & Expo that took place in November 2011.
The council’s economic development awards competition is open to economic development organizations in the group’s 10-state region that includes Ohio. The program recognizes outstanding efforts in development of marketing materials, marketing events and economic development.
Billed as Ohio’s first Utica shale play conference, YOUNG 2011 sold out its exhibit space and attracted nearly 2,000 people to the day-long series of events at the Covelli Centre downtown. Attendees interacted with about 70 exhibitors and learned about job opportunities, the science of hydraulic fracturing and essential tips for landowners.
"It was our intention that YOUNG would serve as a welcoming beacon to the shale gas industry for the Mahoning Valley, and after two successful annual events (YOUNG 2012 took place in September), it is now being recognized as a premier industry event where business-to-business transactions are taking place on the Covelli Centre's floor," said Eric Planey, the Regional Chamber’s vice president for international business attraction.
“YOUNG 2011 would not have been a success without the participation of sponsors, exhibitors and speakers,” he added. Among those speakers were Joel Mastervich, president and chief operating officer, V&M Star; Thomas E. Stewart, executive vice president, Ohio Oil & Gas Association; and David Mustine, general manager for energy, JobsOhio.
During the conference, V&M’s sister company, VAM USA, announced plans to invest $57 million in a new steel pipe finishing plant in Youngstown and employ 100 workers.
