Real Estate Forum Names Cafaro 'Industry Icon'
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Anthony Cafaro Sr., retired president of The Cafaro Co., is listed as one of 22 "icons" in the commercial real estate industry in the May 2013 issue of Real Estate Forum.
The magazine selected Cafaro as part of a group of professionals, noting that “with careers in the sector that span as long as a half century and a variety of pathways that have brought them up through the ranks, each of the men … can claim impeccable bona fides in commercial real estate.” The group includes executives from other major development companies such as Macerich, Simon Property Group, Westfield, General Growth Properties and CBL & Associates.
Founded by the late William M. Cafaro in the 1940s, The Cafaro Co. is one of the nation’s largest privately held shopping center developers, and owns and oversees more than 30 million square feet of commercial real estate in 11 states.
Cafaro, who was president of the company from 1982 until his retirement in December 2009, began his career in the real estate industry at age 13, working maintenance on some of his father’s early properties. He continues as a consultant with the company, which his sons, William and Anthony Jr., today operate as co-presidents.
“After working in the shopping center industry for so many years, I am indeed gratified to receive this very prestigious recognition as an ‘Industry Icon,’ ” Cafaro said ina statement released by his family's company. “In my new role as consultant and counselor to The Cafaro Co., I look forward to continuing my involvement in the industry.”
