Oh-Penn Sets Events to Highlight Manufacturing
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Manufacturers and providers of education and training throughout the five-counties of the Oh-Penn Pathways to Competitiveness have scheduled events this month as part of a national manufacturing month intitiative.
Supported by members of the Oh-Penn Interstate Region initiative, the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and the Manufacturing Industry Partnership of Lawrence and Mercer Counties, the events will highlight the importance of manufacturing to the nation's economy and draw attention to the many rewarding high-skill jobs available in manufacturing fields, says Eric Karmecy, Oh-Penn Pathways project manager, West Central Job Partnership.
On Saturday, student teams from school districts that include Grove City, Hickory, Jamestown, Mercer and West Middlesex high schools in Pennsylvania and Lakeview in Ohio will be at the eCenter@LindenPointe in Hermitage, Pa., to practice for the Best Robotics Warp XX Competition. The public is invited to the eCenter between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to watch the student teams practice. The Best Robotics Warp XX Competition will be held from 8:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at Grove City College. Students are charged with building a working robot and developing a marketing presentation and engineering notebook for their project.
On Oct. 24, the fourth annual Business & Industry Career Fair will take place at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, Pa. More than 1,000 10th-grade students from Lawrence and Mercer counties are invited to attend. Jeremy Bout, producer of The Edge Factor Show, will deliver the keynote address about what students should find exciting and interesting in the world of manufacturing.
Students will also have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with employers in the Exhibitor Lobby to learn more about jobs in the area and the education and skills required for careers in industry. Companies set to participate are Bruce & Merrilees, Central Heating & Cooling, Channellock, Ellwood Crankshaft & Machine, Heraeus Electro-nite, Infocision, Inmetco, Jameson Hospital, MedExpress, New Castle News, Pennsylvania American Water, Roll Forming Corp, Silgan-IPEC, Veka, Xaloy and Zambelli Fireworks.
In addition, area career centers will host open houses for students and their parents to see the labs and equipment for various manufacturing training programs. The Columbiana County Career & Technical Center, Lisbon, will open its doors from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 to allow the public to tour its new materials-joining lab, a complete renovation of the welding lab with a return of machining as part of the program.
The Lawrence County Career & Technical Center, New Castle, Pa., will hold an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25. An open house for the Mercer County Career Center, Mercer, Pa., is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8.
Oh-Penn is the first officially designated interstate region in the country. Composed of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania, the Oh-Penn Interstate Region covers three workforce investment areas, an entire Metropolitan Statistical Area and 764,722 people. The goal of the initiative is to enhance economic and workforce development of the five counties that share a common labor force, worker dislocations, current and emerging industries and a collective vision.
