NAMII Secures $5 Million Grant to Fund Research
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, the Latrobe, Pa. entity that manages NAMII, jointly announced Friday the receipt of a $5 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The grant will fund collaborative research led by NAMII and principal collaborators EWI, Concurrent Technologies Corp., and the University of Louisville, along with 23 partners from industry, universities, and national laboratories, according to the announcement.
The research program is summarized as a three-part study to ensure that quality parts are produced and certified for use in products made by a variety of industries and supply chains. The emphasis of the research is to develop specific tools needed for additive manufacturing applications to progress from prototype to market ready.
Said U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13, in a statement congratulating NAMII on the grant award, “As we face difficult decisions in the next few weeks on funding the government, NAMII is a great example of investments being made that provide jobs and increase the quality of life for Americans.”
The 23 partners collaborating in the NAMII-led research effort include: M7 Technologies of Youngstown, Georgia Tech, University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Stratonics, B6Sigma, Paramount Industries, General Electric (Aviation and Inspection Technologies), North Carolina State University, Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Texas El Paso, Penn State University, Northrup Grumman, Boeing, Stryker, Harvest Technologies, Solid Concepts, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Imaginestics and Ingersoll Machine Tools.
A second award, totaling $2.4M, was awarded to NAMII member, Northern Illinois University, and its principal collaborators.
NAMII is a public-private partnership involving industry, academia, government, and workforce development resources all collaborating to transition additive manufacturing technology to the mainstream U.S. manufacturing sector.
