McGuffey Society’s 'Memories With' Meshel
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University Trustee Harry Meshel will recall a lifetime of memories at 10 a.m. July 19. The former Ohio senator, former president of the state Senate and former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party is part of a new William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society community engagement program series, “Memories With.”
The free presentation will be held in the meeting room of Kravitz’s Deli on Belmont Avenut in Liberty Township.
Meshel will relate his memories of growing up on the East Side, the Great Depression, his years in the U.S. Merchant Marine and his lifetime in Mahoning Valley and Ohio politics. A question-and-answer period will follow.
A charter member of the society, founded in 1961, Meshel is an alumnus of the original McGuffey Elementary School that stood at the corner of Madison Avenue and Albert Street. He is a recipient of the society’s Pioneer Award that honors individuals for their contributions to the community. Coitsville Township will present Meshel with a proclamation before the program for his legacy of public engagement and his support of the society. The McGuffey Wildlife Preserve, purchased by the society and donated to Mill Creek Metroparks, is in the township.
Meshel is widely recognized for his many civic, cultural and educational contributions to the Youngstown area. He has met generations of political leaders -- among them John F. Kennedy and President Lyndon B. Johnson -- and will share anecdotes from his lengthy career in public service about these two presidents and other notable personages.
