'Life and Limb' Civil War Exhibit at YSU Campus
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- “Life and Limb: The Toll of the Civil War,” an exhibition developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health, is on display in Cushwa Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Presented and sponsored by YSU’s Rose Melnick Medical Museum, the exhibit runs through Jan. 31. It is free and open to the public.
In conjunction with the exhibit, a lecture on “Black Veterans: Redefining Citizenship in Post-Civil War Ohio” will be presented at noon, Thursday, Jan. 30, in Room B112 of Cushwa Hall. The lecture will be given by Kelly Selby, assistant professor of History at Walsh University in Canton.
The exhibit, which is traveling around the United States, explores the experiences of disabled Civil War veterans, focusing on Civil War medicine, the brutality of battlefield operations and the challenges of caring for the wounded during wartime. More than 3 million soldiers fought in the war from 1861 to 1865. More than 500,000 died, and almost as many were wounded but survived. Hundreds of thousands were permanently disabled by battlefield injuries or surgery, which saved lives by sacrificing limbs. The exhibit is presented through six large banners, covering The Horrors of War, Maimed Men, Honorable Scars, The Empty Sleeve and Sacrifices Forgotten.
