Library Sets Crossword Competition for Saturday
POLAND, Ohio -- Crossword puzzle enthusiasts are invited to participate in the third annual Crossword Puzzle Challenge, which will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Poland Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
The tournament’s format will be similar to that of the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, founded by Will Shortz, puzzle editor for The New York Times. Event organizer Tyler Clark travelled to Brooklyn last month for the national event.
"Being a puzzle nerd, I was thrilled to finally meet Will Shortz in person, and it was sobering to put my puzzle-solving skills to the test with nearly 600 other crossword fans from across the country," Clark said.
Saturday’s event features three unpublished, daily New York Times crosswords on which all contestants are scored, and a final, playoff puzzle for the winners of the preliminary rounds. Participants have 20 minutes to solve each puzzle. Solving references and outside help are not permitted. The playoff puzzle will be conducted on giant, standup boards for all to watch. Winning will be determined by accuracy of solutions and solving speed.
"Anyone who enjoys puzzles will enjoy this event," Clark said. "Even if you're not particularly fast or are nervous about being scored, it's just a fun time to be with others who enjoy puzzles."
Registration to participate in the event is $10. There is still time to register, and walk-up registration is available. Registration forms are available at public libraries throughout Mahoning County. Checks should be made payable to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County and completed forms should be sent to the Development Office, Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH 44503. For more information, contact the library’s development office at 330 744 9636, ext. 51630.
