KSU to Observe 1970 Shooting of 4 Students
KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University will hold its 44th annual commemoration of May 4, 1970, May 3 and 4. The observance, hosted by the May 4 Task Force, is an occasion for the university community to gather and remember the deaths of four students shot by the Ohio National Guard and those injured as well as reflect on the meaning of May 4.
The May 4 Task Force, a student organization on campus, will host two panels May 3. The afternoon session, “Activism Then and Now,” will feature both current and former political activists, including lawyer Staughton Lynd of Niles, Native American activist Bill Means and members of student organizations from Kent State.
The second panel, “Eyewitnesses to History: May 4th Perspectives,” will present speakers present May 4, 1970, and saw what happened. Among them are shooting victims Dean Kahler, Joe Lewis and professor and writer Tom Grace. Chic Canfora, who witnessed the shooting, also will also speak.
The annual candlelight vigil march is scheduled for 11 p.m. May 3. The vigil and subsequent march will begin at the Victory Bell and continue around campus, concluding at the Prentice Hall parking lot. There lighted markers identify where the four victims -- Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder -- were killed.
