Kennerly to Visit YSU for Scholarship Fundraiser
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Pulitzer Prize winning photographer David Hume Kennerly will visit Youngstown State University’s College of Creative Arts & Communication for a reception, gallery talk and fundraising event Oct. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in Bliss Hall’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery.
The event is made possible by YSU’s Department of Art and the Earle and Ida Cliffe Fund. While it is free and open to the public, reservations are required by contacting Mari Ann Cann at 330 941 3629 or emailing [email protected] before Sept. 30.
The exhibit will remain installed in the space through Oct. 5.
Kennerly has donated 53 photographs from his newest collection -- David Hume Kennerly On the iPhone -- to support the creation of the David Hume Kennerly Scholarship in Art. The scholarship is geared toward photography students. Forty of the photographs have been framed and will be available for sale that evening at a pre-established price of $500 each. The remaining 13 unframed photographs will be available for $350 each. Photos may be previewed at www.ysu.edu/art/kennerly.
“While the event is to serve as a fundraiser for art scholarships, it's also a celebration of one of the most profound and respected photographers in the world today," said Bryan W. DePoy, dean of the College of Creative Arts & Communication. "We are so grateful for David Hume Kennerly's generosity and support. To have his name memorialized and affiliated with the College of Creative Arts and Communication is a tremendous honor.”
David Hume Kennerly has been named “One of the 100 Most Important People in Photography” by American Photo Magazine. A photographer of American presidents from Nixon to Obama, Kennerly has been shooting on the front lines of history for decades. His coverage of the war in Vietnam earned him the 1972 Pulitzer Prize in journalism for feature photography.
DePoy noted that Kennerly is a friend of Ed O'Neill's, and accompanied O'Neill when he was awarded an honorary doctorate from YSU and served as the commencement speaker last year. "Clearly, the visit to Youngstown State University had an impact on Kennerly, providing the community with this one-of-a-kind opportunity to view and purchase his artwork," the dean said.
