Holiday Spectacular at Arms Family Museum
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Arms Family Museum is sparkling for the holiday season as the fifth annual Memories of Christmas Past holiday spectacular opens Dec. 1. The seven period rooms of the Arms Family home are filled with rare, one-of-a-kind, vintage decorations that include ornaments, lighting, trees, toys and trains.
This display features many pieces from the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s collection as well as items on loan from private collectors, said Leann Rich, manager of education and external relations. Display highlights include antique Neapolitan angels imported from Italy, paper Dresden ornaments, a groovy retro style 1960s living room and hundreds of icicles, lights and ornaments.
The museum is the 1905 arts and crafts mansion of Olive and Wilford Arms and the home of the historical society.
Memories of Christmas Past received special recognition from The Golden Glow, a Christmas collector’s organization. The Arms Family Museum and its volunteers were honored with the 2012 Ambassador of the Year Award in recognition of the museum’s love of Christmas and sharing it with others, Rich noted. Several members of The Golden Glow lend their collections to the display.
Visitors are welcome on the self-guided tour to make multiple passes through the period rooms as well as to visit the second floor local history exhibits. The Anne Kilcawley Christmas Hands-On History Room will feature an old-fashioned 19th century Christmas with period artifacts, decorations and craft projects.
Memories of Christmas Past runs through Jan. 6, 2013. Hours for the museum are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; it is closed on Mondays, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day.
Admission for the exhibit is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $4 for children ages 3 to 18. Proceeds from the event help fund the educational and exhibit programs sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
Sponsors of the event include the Anne Kilcawley Christman Foundation, The Vindicator, The Edward J. DeBartolo Corp., Farmers Trust Co., Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. and Virginia Dineen.
