Hayek Awarded Architects Institute's Gold Medal
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- K. Anthony Hayek, principal with MS Consultants Inc., has received the Gold Medal Award for career achievement from the Eastern Ohio Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The award is presented to an individual who has provided, over an extended period, exceptional contributions to the chapter and the profession through high-level design and service.
The award was presented at AIA Eastern Ohio’s 2012 Design Awards and Annual Meeting dinner Nov. 10.
“I truly appreciate being selected for this AIA Golden Medal honor,” Hayek said. “Architecture is one of the most personally rewarding professions one can choose. I’ve had the opportunity to work on some really great projects during my career. Key to the success of those projects is being fortunate in having great staff and mentoring young architects.”
Hayek, a graduate of the School of Architecture at Kent State University, owned his own architectural design firm, K. Anthony Hayek Associates, for 28 years before merging his practice in 1997 with MS Consultants where he was appointed director of architecture in northeastern Ohio. He was named vice president of architecture in 2007 and became a principal of the firm in 2010.
At the outset of his career, Hayek’s worked with a classmate at Kent State, Robert Mancini of Cleveland, in the retail architecture market. Among Hayek’s first commissions were St. Maron Church and the Maronite Center on Meridian Road in Youngstown.
He was instrumental in developing the city of Youngstown’s Central Business District Design Review Criteria under former Mayor Patrick Ungaro, and he later served five years as chairman of the Design Review Committee.
Among Hayek’s projects are the Covelli Centre, Youngstown; Holy Family Church, Poland; several Youngstown State University projects including the Watts Indoor Practice Facility, the Stambaugh Stadium expansion and the Ward Beecher and Bliss Hall renovations; the Boardman Township Administration/Police/Road Department complex, Boardman; Ohio Heart Institute, Youngstown; First Place Bank (formerly First Federal of Youngstown) Corporate Center in Boardman; Ursuline Preschool renovations and addition, Canfield; Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, Boardman; City of Girard Justice Center; and St. Paul the Apostle Church, New Middletown.
Hayek is a registered architect in Ohio and 23 other states, and he is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
