Harness Race to Give Young Horses a Tryout
CANFIELD, Ohio -- "And they’re off!” will be heard in a slightly different context Sunday. That's when the Canfield Harness Horsemen’s Association presents a harness racing matineeat the Canfield Fairgrounds Grandstand.
In harness racing terms, a “matinee” traditionally indicates a nonwagering event, according to Jim Criss, association president. The purpose of the morning event is to allow young horses to race in an exercise/training mile that will be their first experience of leaving the starting gate and to give the public a chance to see how the horses are prepared for a race.
Everyone is welcome to get a close-up look at the horses, the drivers and the sulkies -- the wheeled vehicles that are the common bond between them.
Admission is free. Gates to the Fairgrounds will open at 9 a.m., and post time is 10 a.m.
With more than 100 members, the Canfield Harness Horsemen's Association is one of the largest horsemen's groups in Ohio. The group has been active more than 30 years.
