Former Giffords’ Aide to Speak at Penn State Shenango
SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango will host motivational speaker Daniel Hernandez Jr. at 6 p.m. next Tuesday. Hernandez was an intern for the office of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-8 Ariz., in 2011 when a mass shooting near Tucson that targeted Giffords occurred.
Hernandez will speak in the campus auditorium about civic engagement, social responsibility and leadership through diversity.
Hernandez has been widely credited for acting to help save Gifford's life after the gunman shot her and 18 other people. As Gifford's campaign manager, he oversaw all aspects of her campaigns including coordination with other candidates from legislative, statewide, and congressional races.
Penn State says the speaker is dedicated to student advocacy and political activism. He has served as a director on the Arizona Students Association Board of Directors and advocated for affordable and accessible higher education for all residents of Arizona.
When he was a student at the University of Arizona, Hernandez was elected an officer in its Residence Hall Association and the Arizona Students Association. Hernandez has also has received awards from organizations including the U.S. Office of Personnel Management Teddy Roosevelt Award for Public Service and a presidential citation from the League of United Latin American Citizens.
