Community Foundation Names Harrell Its President
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley has chosen Shari L. Harrell, a lifelong resident of the Valley, as its president.
She succeeds Patricia Brozik, who retires June 26 after leading the foundation since its inception in 2001. Harrell begins her duties July 8.
“We’re starting a new chapter,” said Phillip B. Dennison, chairman of the foundation board and a principal at Packer Thomas. “Shari brings impressive experience that will accelerate our efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents of the Valley.
“Patti’s work over the past 12 years has laid a great foundation for this expansion. On behalf of all the current and past board members of the foundation, we want to thank Patty for all she has done.”
Most recently Harrell was executive director of the Warren YWCA where she spearheaded a revitalization effort and launched a $2.1 million supportive housing project.
Throughout her career and as a volunteer Harrell “has demonstrated a passion for serving others and making a difference in the Valley,” Dennison said.
She has served on the boards of several organizations, including the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation, Upton Association and Warren City Schools Board of Education. She is also a winner of the Mahoning Valley Athena Award.
As president of the Community Foundation, Harrell will manage its fundraising and grant making. The foundation has more than $12.5 million in assets with an additional $26.7 million held by supporting organizations. With 100 funds, the foundation attracted public support of $2.2 million during 2012.
“What excites me most is the recent growth in the local economy and the opportunity to help a new generation of leaders appreciate philanthropy,” Harrell said. “The Community Foundation has done such a great job in these formative years and I’m excited about contributing further.”
During the time she spent in real estate, Harrell was a member of the Warren Area Board of Realtors and the Warren Area Multiple Listing Service Board, serving as president of both.
Harrell holds an MBA from Kent State University and a baccalaureate from Bowling Green State University.
