Civil War Scholar to Address History Center May 4

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Allen C. Guelzo, a historian of the Civil War, will kick off the educational programming at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center at 7 p.m. May 4, the Mahoning Valley Historical Center. Guelzo will discuss, "Was the Civil War the Second American Revolution?"
“We are honored to bring a nationally renowned scholar of the Civil War to our community as a highlight of a series of programs and observances of this national calamity that occurred 150 years ago,” said Bill Lawson, center executive director, in a prepared statement. “There were fundamental changes in the way Americans viewed their nation and each other during and after the Civil War, and Dr. Guelzo is among the most qualified individuals of our time to present the scope and gravity of these changes.”
Guelzo will be available after his lecture to sign copies of his books. Two titles will be for sale: Fateful Lightning: A New History of the Civil War and Reconstruction and Lincoln: A Very Short Introduction.
Guelzo is the director of Civil War Era Studies and a professor of history at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa. He was born in Yokohama, Japan, and holds master;s degree and doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books and has written for several national publications. Together with Patrick Allitt and Gary W. Gallagher, he team-taught The Teaching Company’s new edition of its American History series as well as courses on DVD on Abraham Lincoln, American intellectual history (The American Mind) and the American Revolution.
A one-hour meet-and-greet will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and reserved lecture seating. Proceeds will support the Campaign for the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center. To attend, call the historical society at 330 743 2589.
The lecture is free and open to the public but tickets are required and must be picked up beforehand. Tickets are available at The Arms Family Museum on Wick Avenue from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
