Chamber Seeks Participants in Government Leadership Academy
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Registrations are being accepted for the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber’s 2014 Mahoning Valley Local Government Leadership Academy. The program runs from Jan. 28 through March 25.
The two-hour classes begin at 6.m. with a light dinner served a half-hour beforehand. All sessions will be held in the chamber offices in First National Tower.
“The academy was founded in 2008 and geared especially forelected officials, those considering running for office, government and school employees and local business and nonprofit officials. It’s been a great program for bringing government and the business community together,” said Tony Paglia, in a prepared statement. Paglia is vice president for government and media affairs at the chamber. Since its founding, he noted, more than 120 Mahoning Valley residents have graduated.
The nine-week series of classes are offered to help people become effective government leaders. It also gives class members a broad perspective of how local government operations should be conducted. Among the classes are how to run for office, the duties of an elected official, local government collaboration, leadership skills, ethics, building sustainable communities, dealing with the media and citizens and promoting economic development.
Among the presenters are Ken Carano, former state representative and Austintown trustee-eElect; Darlene St. George, Howland Township administrator; attorney Matt Blair; Dan Pecchia, owner of Pecchia Communications; Marla Carano of Youngstown State University; and the economic development team of the Regional Chamber. The academy is sponsored by Blair & Latell law firm, Niles, and Berk Enterprises, Howland.
