Chamber Names Coviello Government Affairs VP
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Guy Coviello has been named vice president of government affairs at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber. In his new position, Coviello, who begins Sept. 30, will represent interests of the chamber and the business community with federal, state and local elected officials as well as handling news media relations.
He succeeds Tony Paglia, who retired in May.
“We look forward to the contributions Guy will make to our team and membership. His talent and years of experience in the media realm serve to enhance the efforts of the Regional Chamber,” said Tom Humphries, president and CEO.
Coviello is a longtime employee of the Tribune Chronicle in Warren, having started in 1984 as a sports writer, most recently as editor, in which he oversaw all newsroom operations. He also created a regional editors group with other newspapers in the Tribune’s chain to collaborate on assignments and share resources. Other positions he held at the Tribune include managing editor, assistant managing editor, opinion page editor, news editor, youth editor and copy editor.
At the chamber, Coviello will create and lead opportunities for chamber member to participate in government administration and the legislative process; represent the chamber in the appropriate government arenas; and advise members on political issues that affect business. He will also coordinate activities of the chamber’s Government Affairs Council and Grow Mahoning Valley, a coalition that sets priorities for infrastructure projects.
Coviello founded the Tribune Chronicle/Forum Health Fitness Challenge, a civic journalism project that raised more than $100,000 annually for local charities and increased awareness of important health issues. In addition, he founded the Rock Off, an annual battle of teen bands that raised more than $10,000 for the former Tod Children’s Hospital, and provided leadership in newspaper industry initiatives to increase youth readership.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, offered his congratulations to Coviello, who he said had contributed much, both personally and professionally, to the Mahoning Valley. “I think it speaks volumes that Guy was raised here, educated here, made his professional career here, and is now raising his children here. I have always respected his work as a journalist, and I am sure he will continue to bring both competence and expertise to the work of the Regional Chamber,” Ryan said.
