Butler to Hold Art Auction, Open Fall Exhibits
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Great American Art Auction will be held Oct. 9 at the Butler Institute of American Art here. Proceeds will benefit the museum’s free community programs.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the auction, which will feature hors d’oeuvres and an open bar, and the live bidding, conducted by Jeff Byce of Byce Auction & Realty, will start at 7:30 p.m. Sponsors are Stifel Nicolaus and Piper’s Printing Co.
Admission is $55 for Butler members and $65 for nonmembers. Checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express will be accepted for purchases. Works up for auction can be viewed online at the Byce website.
In addition, several exhibits will open this month, including two that run Sept. 21 through Nov. 30. “Steven McCallum: Paintings” will feature the hard-edge geometric works from 1985 to 2006 that are his hallmark. The Ohio artist will be featured at a meet-the-artist 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Davis Gallery.
“Masters of American Photography,” an exhibit from the collection of the Reading (Pa.) Museum will include works by Alfred Steiglitz, Ansel Adams, Walker Evans and others. Richard Mitchell, professor emeritus in the art department at Youngstown State University, will present a gallery talk at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Finnegan-Hynes Gallery.
“Sherrie McGraw: Then & Now” will run Sept. 28 through Nov. 30 in the MacIntosh Gallery. The exhibition will spotlight nearly 80 classical paintings and drawings y the artist, who will give a portrait-painting demonstration 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 and be featured at a meet-the-artist from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 12.
