AST2 in 3-D Manufacturing Show at McDonough
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Applied Systems & Technology Transfer LLC, better known as AST2, is participating in the summer art show in the McDonough Museum of Art, "Re-shaping Ideas, Ingenuity in 3D Technology," at Youngstown State University.
The show, which begins today and runs through Aug. 2, will focus on additive manufacturing and how this innovative technology is transforming industry as well as empowering individuals to design and make their own creations using 3-D printing.
Hours are 11 a.m.to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
3-D printing allows items to be built by layering materials -- plastics, metals or paper -- until the object is created.
AST2 is hosting the Innovation and Creation Space. Participants will move seamlessly from designing their creations with a simple computer-aided design (CAD) program to a holographic virtual model to producing their prototypes by using 3-D printing equipment. Staff will be available to work with visitors who are also invited to participate in a dynamic, moving community design mural, Ideas in Motion.
“3-D printing and additive manufacturing is an exciting, transformative technology such that it is difficult to imagine the possibilities,” said Julie Michael Smith, executive vice president, AST2, in a prepared statement. “Human organ printing, printed houses and complex solid assemblies are possible. People will become ‘prosumers’ -- consumers who produce their own creations.”
AST2 has developed the Inventorcloud, a STEM education program for primary, secondary and post-secondary schools that challenges students to collaborate in problem-based activities to solve real-world challenges. Students apply the design process by using computer design and visualization tools to create virtual prototypes that are then produced with rapid prototyping equipment.
