Schwebel Baking Co. to Sponsor Long Drive Contest
VIENNA, Ohio -- Schwebel Baking Co. will be the title sponsor of the 2004 Giant Eagle LPGA Classic Long Drive Contest. Scheduled for 2 p.m. July 13, the contest will feature six of the longest hitting LPGA professionals on the tour, reports Eddie Thomas, executive director of the tournament.The event takes place on the alternate No. 1 tee at Squaw Creek Country Club, 761 Youngstown-Kingsville Road. The grounds open to spectators at 7 a.m. Tickets are available at participating Giant Eagle Supermarkets and the tournament office.Schwebel Baking Co. celebrates its 10th anniversary as sponsor of the Long Drive Contest this July, at the same time that the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic is celebrating 15 years of classic golf in the Mahoning Valley. Past winners of the Long Drive Contest include Caroline Blaylock, Jean Zedlitz, Maria Hjorth and Annette DeLuca. Blaylock's record drive of 322 yards in 1998 still stands.The long drive format consists of two elimination rounds and one final round that conclude with the crowning of the 2004 Schwebel Baking Co. Long Drive Champion."We encourage members of the community to join us on July 13 for another exciting, power-packed Schwebel's Long Drive contest," says Alyson Winick, senior vice president and third generation Schwebel family member. A portion of the proceeds generated from the 2004 contest supports local children's and educational charities chosen through the Mahoning Valley Sports Charities Inc. grant program, she adds.Schwebel Baking Co., founded in 1906 by Joseph and Dora Schwebel, is one of the largest family-owned, independent baking companies in the country, producing a variety of fresh breads, buns and rolls under the Schwebels, Millbrook, Country Hearth, Roman Meal, and Sunmaid Raisin Bread brand names. The company operates four bakeries and 30 distribution centers in Ohio, Pennsylvania and western New York.The Giant Eagle LPGA Classic is owned by Mahoning Valley Sports Charities Inc., a Youngstown, Ohio-based nonprofit organization. In 11 years, more than $3.8 million has been donated to local children's and educational charities on behalf of MVSC. Tournament Founders Club sponsors include Cellular One, Trumbull County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Giant Eagle, National City Bank, Pepsi, Superior Beverage Group, Dean Dairy Products Co., Friends of Squaw Creek and Superior Printing Co."
