YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Construction trailers and equipment will soon be filling the parking lot outside DeBartolo Hall at Youngstown State University as work begins on the campus' new $12.1 million Andrews Recreation and Wellness Center. The formal groundbreaking ceremony for the 65,000-square-foot facility is 2 p.m. April 19 in the F-2 parking lot on the north side of DeBartolo Hall. The construction is permanently closing the F-2 lot, which has about 130 spaces reserved for faculty and staff. The lot will close as of the end of the day on April 14.The center, which will be built onto the west side of Kilcawley Center, will be the first privately-financed recreation center at a public university in Ohio. The university and unions representing YSU faculty and professional/administrative staff recently signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the parking situation. Under the agreement, 124 parking spaces will be sectioned off and designated for faculty and staff in the M-24 parking lot across Fifth Avenue from DeBartolo Hall. In addition, 21 spaces will be reserved for faculty and staff in the M-2 parking deck, and the M-12 lot on Lincoln Avenue, which has about 20 spaces, will be set aside for faculty and staff use.The memorandum of understanding is effective through Aug. 1, 2005, and the parties agree to meet at least once each term to discuss parking issues. Joe Scarnecchia, director of support services, says the university will construct additional parking lots as part of the campus master plan.YSU faculty, staff, students and the community are invited to the groundbreaking ceremony.Visit Youngstown State University: www.ysu.edu"
