SALEM, Ohio -- Salem Regional Medical Center is embarking on a $4.6 million expansion of its oncology department. The project is one aspect of the organization’s facility planning efforts to renovate the space vacated as a result of moving inpatient rooms to the new private room tower, officials said.
At 11,900 square feet, the new cancer treatment center will be three times the size of the current unit’s space, said Dr. Anita Hackstedde, CEO of Salem Regional Medical Center. “There is a real need in our region for comprehensive and easily accessible oncology services,” Hackstedde noted. “With the addition of these expanded treatment areas and new private treatment room accommodations, our patients can find comfort in being close to their family and friends, while coping with a difficult diagnosis.”
Wilmot Sanz, the Gaithersburg, Md.-based designer of the hospital’s new 87-bed patient tower, is the architect for the oncology expansion project. The Jack Gibson Construction Co., Warren, is the general contractor. Construction is expected to be completed in September.
The new oncology unit will be on the medical center’s second floor, and provide expanded space for medical oncology services and infusion therapy. Features of the new unit include:
A community treatment center, furnished with 6 reclining chairs for patients who wish to receive therapy in a more social, group treatment setting. This area also includes a nurses’ station, four televisions and a fireplace.
A patient boutique, featuring wigs, scarves and hats; with private consultations for those facing hair loss.
Salem Regional Medical Center employs 1,000; it is Columbiana County’s largest employer.
