Tuesday, September 16, 2014ROOTSTOWN, Ohio – Northeast Ohio Medical University now houses the Timken Foundation of Canton Innovation Corridor, part of the school’s REDIzone (Research, Entrepreneurship, Discovery and Innovation Zone) at its campus here.
The ribbon was cut Sept. 15 as key business leaders, local legislators, start-up companies and university researchers gathered for the official opening of the Timken Corridor. Its mission is to house early-stage biomedical companies so they can take advantage of NEOMED services and resources.. These include mentorship from faculty and researchers, Institutional Review Board certification for clinical trials, technology transfer assistance and the university’s comparative medicine unit.
"The REDIzone is one of several initiatives that allow us to foster innovation and technology commercialization through strategic partners between the public and private sector," said Jay Gershen, president of NEOMED. "By partnering with companies that focus on innovation aligned with our core research focus areas, we see an opportunity to enhance our own research mission, assist these companies in taking their research from concept to capital, and ultimately generate successful private companies embedded in northeast Ohio."
Three tenants -- Crystal Diagnostics, EP Technologies LLC and Summa Health System – currently occupy space in the Timken Corridor, which can accommodate up to 10 companies. The renovated space features laboratories with adjacent offices and conference spaces, and is near the university's new Research and Graduate Education Building.
Elliot Reed, program manager for the REDIzone, also works with more than a dozen other companies in the JumpStart network, providing strategic and entrepreneurial support that links biotechnology innovators, business development organizations, funding resources and area teaching hospitals.
