Tourists Bring $480M Boost to Trumbull County

WARREN, Ohio -- Visitors spent nearly $317 million in Trumbull County during 2013, resulting in $480 million in total direct, indirect and induced sales for area businesses, according to a study sponsored by the Ohio Department of Development's Tourism Division.

The study, conducted by Longwoods International and Tourism Economics, based in Wayne, Pa., sampled 200,000 consumers and provided information regarding economic impact, visitor profiles, image, advertising awareness and effectiveness, and return on investment.

According to the study, visitors spent $316.9 million in the county during 2013, compared to $292.2 million in 2011. Total economic impact stood at $480 million compared to $448 million in 2011, the study shows.

The survey also found that the tourism industry:

• Generated $12.8 million in local taxes, $29.9 million in federal taxes, and $18.8 million in state taxes.
• Sustained more than 6,100 jobs that produced $118.6 million in wages.
• Supports one in every 13 jobs in Trumbull County.
• Generated $87.5 million for retailers, $79.4 million for food and beverage establishments, and $42.2 million for and recreation and entertainment venues.
• Generated $28 million in indirect sales for manufacturing, $26.7 million in education, and $14.9 million in health care.
• Accounted for $16.9 billion in sales across northeastern Ohio, or 37.4% of Ohio's overall tourism sales.
• Reduced the tax burden by an average of $650 per household in Ohio.
