AKRON, Ohio -- FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. announced today that the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station has resumed generating electricity at the 100% power level, sending nearly 900 megawatts of electricity to customers in the region. The plant reached the 100% level at 12:19 a.m. April 4.This is the first time the plant has operated at 100% in about two years, after an extended outage to refuel the reactor, replace the reactor head and make other equipment and performance improvements. After getting authorization from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to return the plant to service in early March, Davis-Besse personnel safely started the turbine-generator on March 15, then conducted a scheduled test of generating equipment two days later, which entailed disconnecting from the power grid. Following successful completion of that test and some minor equipment repairs, plant operators reconnected the turbine-generator to the grid March 27 and methodically increased power levels, reaching 100% yesterday."The start-up activities over the past few weeks were executed without incident," says FENOC Chief Operating Officer Lew Myers, "showing good attention to detail and sound judgment by operators."The performance of the generating equipment was nearly flawless, indicating plant equipment is in good condition and ready to support safe, reliable operations, he adds.FirstEnergy Corp. is a registered public utility holding company.generating equipment two days later, which entailed disconnecting from the power grid.
