Friday, November 21, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Local philanthropy leaders are encouraging Mahoning Valley residents to observe “Giving Tuesday” by donating to their favorite nonprofit organizations on Dec. 2, the Tuesday that follows “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday.”
“While shopping for the people you love, think about a charity or cause that’s close to you,” says Shari Harrell, president of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, which supports local nonprofits and manages donor funds. “Your gift will be highly appreciated there as well.”
Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 by New York City’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. It has since become a globally observed day for giving back.
“It’s a simple idea that offers a great opportunity for making a positive impact during the holiday season,” says Patrick K. Wilson, chairman of the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation, which supports health initiatives in Trumbull County.
Adds Phillip B. Dennison, chairman of the Western Reserve Health Foundation, which advances health programs in Mahoning County, “The observance of Giving Tuesday is a great way to support your favorite Mahoning Valley charities and causes.”
Individuals, families, businesses and others who donate or otherwise support Giving Tuesday are encouraged to celebrate on social media with the hashtag #GivingTuesday. Suggestions for posting on Twitter, Facebook and other networks are available at GivingTuesday.org.
“The holiday season is about more than gift-buying and consumerism,” says Paul M. Dutton, chair of the William Swanston Charitable Fund, which supports local programs for at-risk children. “It’s also about community and charity.”
