Ohio BWC Awards $3.5M in Workplace Safety Grants
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation approved 118 safety intervention grants for Ohio employers totaling $3,499,148 in the months of September and October, the agency announced today. The grant program assists Ohio employers in reducing illnesses and injuries and establishing best practices for accident and injury prevention.
“The items employers are purchasing with these grants can help automate processes to improve productivity and make their workers’ jobs safer,” said BWC’s administrator/CEO, Steve Buehrer. “Employers that take advantage of the safety grant program are taking proactive steps to protect their workers and are often able to lower their workers’ compensation costs by reducing on the job injuries.”
Public and private employers from 9 different industries in 51 counties were approved for the grants.
In Trumbull County, McDonald Steel Corp. received $40,000 to purchase a straightener stacking system that will reduce the amount of physical labor needed in the process of stacking, straightening and bundling material.
In Columbiana County, Calcutta Health Care Center received $40,000 to purchase 60 electric high/low beds. And in Mahoning County, a related long-term care facility, Caprice Health Care Center, received $40,000 to purchase 60 beds.
Ohio private and public employers are eligible for safety intervention grants, which include a 3-to-1 matching amount up to a maximum of $40,000. Quarterly data reports and follow-up case studies help BWC determine the effectiveness of employers’ safety interventions and establish best practices, the agency said.
